Clermont-Ferrand is one of the oldest French city and was known by the Greeks in the Gallo-Roman era in the 1st century BC. Clermont-Ferrand boasts an exceptional setting, nestled between the Limagne plain and the magnificent Chaîne des Puys mountain range. As the capital of the Auvergne region and the birthplace of the renowned French mathematician and philosopher, Blaise Pascal, this city is steeped in history and culture.

Its heritage is adorned with a plethora of splendid mansions, including the exquisite Hôtel de Fontfreyde, the elegant Hôtel Savaron, and the charming Hôtel de Chazerat. The old town is adorned with stunning religious edifices, such as the Gothic Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption cathedral, constructed from the dark volcanic stone of Volvic. This cathedral proudly showcases its original stained-glass windows. Also gracing the old town is the Romanesque Notre-Dame-du-Port basilica, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It captivates visitors with its striking choir, adorned with intricately carved capitals, and a crypt that houses the revered Black Virgin, drawing pilgrims from far and wide.

A leisurely stroll through Clermont's historic quarter reveals the charming Rue Pascal, lined with graceful residences, as well as the picturesque streets of Rue des Gras and Rue des Chaussetiers. Along the way, visitors will encounter delightful lava stone fountains, such as the magnificent Renaissance Fontaine d'Amboise.

A visit to the expansive Place de Jaude square is a must, featuring a commanding equestrian statue of Vercingétorix sculpted by Bartholdi at its center. This lively square serves as the beating heart of Clermont-Ferrand's bustling shopping district.

For those with an affinity for archaeology, the Bargoin museum, nestled near the serene Jardin Lecoq gardens, is a treasure trove of prehistoric and Gallo-Roman artifacts unearthed from regional excavations. Noteworthy among these discoveries is a captivating collection of 1st-century wooden votive offerings found in a shrine near the mineral springs known as the Source des Roches in Chamalières.
